The history of the creation of Japanese manga dates back to the year 1814, when the artist Katsushika Hokusai began to capture on paper short stories represented with drawings and with hardly any text.

It was this author who first used the term 'sleeve', which in turn is composed of two different kanji: 'man' which means 'informal', and 'ga' which means 'drawing'.

These 'informal drawings' were originally starred by samurai warriors, and represented events of the time.
