The fiscal deficit is a type of deficit that represents a state or government debt, which brings obvious economic complications and arises from the reckless handling of public money.
The term deficit understands the absence of something, while fiscal refers to all processes that are related to the State. In this way, a fiscal deficit occurs when the government has had a spending that is greater than the economic income of your country.
As there is a fiscal deficit, there are more expenditures (expenses) than income.
Causes of the fiscal deficit
Generally, the fiscal deficit happens for three reasons:
- A misuse of expansionary monetary policy, which puts more money in circulation.
- Lower tax rates.
- Interaction of expansive spending with decreases in tax rates.
However, these three reasons do not necessarily present a serious problem, since if the right economic measures are taken, the matter can be controlled to the point of eradication.
Consequences of the fiscal deficit
The main consequences of the fiscal deficit are the following:
- Economic recession or crisis in a country.
- Indiscriminate increase in inflation, as debt increases.
- By having to reduce government spending, the country stops receiving some benefits, such as investments in roads, street lighting and any kind of public aid.
- Due to existing debt, many projects remain unfinished.
- Should be take quick and sometimes drastic action so that the problem does not get worse quickly.
How is the fiscal deficit financed?
In order to finance the fiscal deficit, mainly the government must decrease expenses and increase income, as a principle of the solution.
On the other hand, the fiscal deficit can be financed issuing a public debt, that is, asking for a loan from neighboring countries.
Finally, you could use the coin issuance, which implies asking the Central Bank to print new bills for the government to take them and give them a receipt in exchange. This is an old alternative; however it is not the most viable.
